SRI LANKA STATISTICS

Sri Lanka currently has over 200,000 reported cases of dementia, and this figure is expected to rise to around 460,000 by 2050 due to our rapidly aging population. Dementia knows no social, economic or ethnic boundaries.

In Sri Lanka, studies show a dementia prevalence of around 4% in semi-urban and suburban populations, with a higher prevalence than other regions in South Asia. Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths reached 6,939 in 2020, accounting for 5.98% of total deaths. The age-adjusted death rate is 27.62 per 100,000 population, ranking Sri Lanka #14 in the world for this statistic, and was higher than the South Asia mean (9.48 per 100,000). The crude incidence rate of dementia was highest in Sri Lanka (84.32 per 100,000), slightly lower than the estimated global average (93.52 per 100,000). Source: AI collated various studies.
